The wrestling world is buzzing a lot these days and for all the wrong reasons. Vince McMahon and Johnny Ace have been charged with a number of serious crimes and the consequences will reverberate for a long time to come, at least until the investigations are completed. It’s certainly not the first scandal in wrestling history, let alone the McMahon family.

Unfortunately, beyond the ropes, there are still plenty of “Dark Side of the Ring” stories waiting to happen. Some are even covered already. But they don’t get nearly enough attention.
THE SPORTSTAR VIDEO OF THE DAY
10 Dawn Marie’s Pregnancy
Dawn Marie had missed all the Alliance angle, eventually making her WWE debut in 2002 as an assistant to Vince McMahon. Her most memorable storyline on SmackDown was against Torrie Wilson, who married her father Al. Coming full circle, her final WWE appearance was managing her longtime WCW load of Lance Storm at the first One Night Stand. However, during her maternity leave, she was released from her contract and subsequently filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The case was settled out of court in 2007.
9 Miss Elizabeth’s Death
For over a decade, Miss Elizabeth was always seen as the girl next door, and a person far too sweet (not too sweet, but saccharine) to be in the business. She would sadly become a stat for the company and died of a drug overdose and a combination of alcohol.

Since she died lying on Lex Luger’s arm, there have been wrestling brain thoughts as to how she died. But after years of living under the thumbs of The Macho Man and later Luger, she may have been the victim of some form of abuse based on how many superstars have talked about her relationship with both men.
8 WWE sues WCW
WCW had struck gold on May 27, 1996, when Scott Hall appeared on Nitro. WWE clearly struggled to keep up with the scorching heat of the nWo. So Vinny Mac went to litigate. He sued WCW for trying to confuse the market by failing to name Hall and Nash and tricking fans into believing it was Razor and Diesel. Somehow, they convinced WCW and the courts that one of the terms of the settlement was that if WCW ever went up for sale, WWE would have the scoop.
7 Raw Was Almost Canceled
When Steve Austin raided Brian Pillman’s house, it instantly became the most controversial corner WWE had ever made. It could also have been the very last for the company. It certainly showed the WWE where the line is and that it should never be crossed. The USA Network was poised to remove Raw from its programming and cancel the flagship show. After apologizing extensively and agreeing never to pull that stunt again, the US agreed to give WWE another chance. The “Pillman’s Got A Gun” segment will live on in disgrace.
6 2007 steroid scandal
Between the federal government coming after McMahon and Nailz’s “gorgeous” testimony, many fans recall the absurdity of the 1994 Steroid Scandal. After welfare policy was instituted, in 2007, the US Congress had asked WWE to presenting policy documents.

The company complied, but in the wake of Woman and her son’s tragedy, the police came after the pharmacy their killer had used. The pharmacy in question had many WWE employees on their customer list, and more than 13 went through various levels of suspension. It was from this one-two punch that the PG-Era was launched to try and start the march towards a more family-friendly business.
5 Arn Anderson vs. Sid Vicious
If you live and tour with the same people for who knows how long, tempers will flare. Maybe even throw punches. But struggling brothers tend to make up for it because they are all part of the same brotherhood in the end. Unfortunately, sometimes things get worse than that. After a nightcap in England in 1993, The Enforcer and The Man Who Rules The World nearly killed each other, fighting with scissors. Bischoff fired Sid, but since Arn was friends with Ric Flair, his job was saved.
4 The concussion lawsuit
Over the past decade, a lawyer has unsuccessfully tried to sue the WWE on behalf of more than a dozen superstars. The claim is that they have all suffered traumatic brain injuries and that the company was concealing the risks. The scandal here could be that the lawyer in question is filling the minds of these superstars with nonsense. Unfortunately, brain studies and concussion research were not nearly as prominent in the heyday of these wrestlers as they are today. Some wrestlers are a bit more current, but with the Wellness Policy in effect, the idea that WWE would be risking negligence here is a bit absurd.
3 The Plane From Hell
Until about a year ago, The Plane Ride From Hell was just called that in most circles. A plane ride where a bunch of wrestlers got a little too much from their giddy ups. Veterans like Scott Hall and Mr. Perfect bore the brunt of the punishment. But thanks Dark side of the ring, the doors blew out the story faster than Perfect and Brock Lensar could have argued in the aisles. The actions of some of these wrestlers were far more horrific than they first led to believe and charges could have been filed if those affected had indeed filed them. Fortunately, the culture backstage is very different than it used to be and there is a good chance that there will never be such a wild story again.
2 Jeff Hardy’s Problems
Jeff Hardy’s life this year was a steady stream of him looking tired in the ring, finally showing that his years in the square circle are taking their toll. But he has also faced substance abuse issues. The man is loved by almost every fan in the company – enough that it hurts when the man falls off the wagon again…and again.

He has had three drunken driving in almost the same number of years and is quite frankly a danger to those around him and on the road. I hope he finally wants the help WWE has given him over the years, not to mention his current employer.
1 Murder of Bruiser Brody
Many old school fans know the legend of Bruiser Brody. A fighter who conjured nightmares in all his opponents and made buckets bleed around the world with a *style he helped innovate. One fateful night in 1988 in Puerto Rico, Brody was allegedly murdered by Jose Gonzalez, aka Invader 1. He had claimed self-defense. But the scandalous part is that every wrestler who could have testified on Brody’s behalf somehow received their subpoena after the trial ended.
