2022 World Athletics Championships: three hopeful medals for Great Britain in Eugene

Here Matt Majendie of Standard Sport rules over medal contenders for Great Britain…

Keely Hodgkinson

One of the shining lights of a mostly disappointing British athletics team at the Tokyo Olympics, the then 19-year-old defied her age and inexperience to take silver in the 800m, which would have been unimaginable early last year. She continued that form with one of the fastest times to win at the Bislett Games this year. The problem is that she is up against American Athing Mu and Kenyan Mary Moraa in her bid for gold.

Max Burgin

Like 800m world record holder David Rudisha, Burgin likes to lead from the front and has done so successfully in his breakout season. No one has done two laps faster than him – his time of 1:43.52 brings comparisons to Seb Coe, who remains the British record holder for distance. Like Coe, Burgin is coached by his father and appears to be free of the hamstring and groin injuries that limited him last season.

Laura Muir

The Scottish vet has fluttered between the two 800m and 1500m middle distances but will only race the longer distance in Eugene. Like her teammate Hodgkinson, she came away from Tokyo with silver to break her duck in the hunt for a first global medal. With the shackles off, she has made no secret of the fact that the world gold is what she is now looking for. The biggest obstacle remains the Kenyan Faith Kipyegon, the Olympic champion.
