A Labor Party leader, Doyin Okupe, has said the discussion over a merger between the party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi and the New Nigeria Peoples Party NNPP presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso is dead and buried.
During an interview with Channels TV on Tuesday, July 5, Okupe said;
“That discussion, or those discussions about a merger, alliance and everything I’ve led for our part; it is dead – DEAD and buried.
It’s not Mr. Peter Obi; the Labor Party and its presidential candidate have long since pulled out of that conversation and it was NNPP that continued to try to capitalize on the lure of Obi’s popularity. Growing up, I decided we weren’t going to take them in the media, so we kept quiet, but they kept going.
The alliance talk had been dead for over four weeks. I’m the leader of the team that went to talk to Kwankwaso’s team, and it was dead.
The moment I asked them a single question: Would it be appropriate and okay for a northern Muslim president to end eight years and another Muslim northerner from the next state to take over?
And they said there’s nothing wrong with that; as far as I’m concerned the discussion was over and it has remained ever since
