This week, the country’s top doctor gave its 307th Covid update since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, sharing encouraging news that the number of cases in the second Omicron wave was falling and the worst fears over earlier modeling were unlikely to materialize. .

This morning he made his last appearance on social media to thank everyone and urge people to continue the great work against the virus.

“We’ve been successful because we’ve done it as a team.

“But don’t give up now. Keep up the great work. We are, as I said, not out of the woods yet, but we can always see a path through the woods.

In a statement this afternoon, the health ministry said at the national level, there were 7,605 new community cases of Covid-19 and 799 current hospitalizations.

The seven-day moving average of community cases today is 7,618.

A total of 1,479 deaths have now been confirmed as attributable to Covid-19, either as an underlying cause of death or as a contributing factor. The average increase in the number of deaths per day from Covid over the past seven days is now 18.

Of the 41 new deaths reported today, three came from the south and seven from Canterbury’s DHB areas.
