The satellite communications (satcom) sector is set to develop significantly over the next decade as investment from private companies and groups pours in. Governments around the world have introduced and modified policies to make the space sector lucrative for investors. 5G networks will also see massive growth by the end of this decade. However, 5G will not be limited only as a terrestrial network technology. In the future, you will also see 5G services from space. Here’s what you need to know.

Major players team up to make 5G from space a reality

Some of the biggest names in the communications technology industry are teaming up to make 5G from space a reality. Qualcomm, Ericsson and Thales, a French aerospace company, have announced a collaboration to test and develop 5G connectivity solutions using LEO (low earth orbit) satellite constellations.

The companies have already conducted studies to test the feasibility of their project. Now they are ready to begin testing smartphone use cases and validating 5G non-terrestrial networks (5G NTN).

This would allow places in the extreme geographic areas to get internet connectivity where the traditional terrestrial network/fiber cannot reach. Even seas and major waterways, where network connectivity is usually lacking, 5G NTN can make a big difference.

Erik Ekudden, senior vice president and chief technology officer, Ericssonsaid this would be an important milestone in the history of communications as the final result could mean that a user could be anywhere in the world, be it in the middle of an ocean or the most remote forest, he/she 5G -satellite can get connectivity.

But this may take a while. Furthermore, how the telcos and the satcom companies work together and on what basis will also determine the extent to which this technology would grow. Of course, it would be best if the user could get 5G connectivity from space. However, for that, users also need a smartphone that can support 5G satellite connectivity.
