MEXICO CITY (AP) – Six police officers were killed and four others injured on Sunday in the northern border state of Nuevo Leon after they were ambushed by a suspected drug gang equipped with 10 homemade armored cars and heavy weapons.
Nuevo Leon state police said the patrol was outnumbered in the pre-dawn attack on a highway leading to the border crossing with Colombia. According to the police, the officers performed “heroic”.
Prosecutors said a female officer was among the dead. There was no direct information on the identity of the attackers. But the nearby city of Nuevo Laredo has long been dominated by the violent Northeast cartel.
Nuevo Leon has suffered heavy violence under the old Zetas cartel for the past ten years. After quieting down, the homicide rate has risen so far this year.
