70 firefighters fight fire in central London pub

Firefighters fight a fire at a pub in central London’s Trafalgar Square.

Ten fire engines and about 70 firefighters were called to The Admiralty pub around 5.10pm on Tuesday.

The London Fire Brigade said half the basement was on fire.

A spokesman for the fire service told the PA news agency that those inside had been evacuated before the crew arrived, and there are no reports of injuries. The number of people evacuated and the cause of the fire are not yet known.

Station commander Keith McDermott, who is on site, said: “The fire is in the basement of a pub in Trafalgar Square. As a result there will be significant traffic disruption and we are asking people to avoid the area if possible.”
