82, Donald Pierce, dies in Portland after seemingly random attack

One of two men attacked around 8:30 p.m. last month while waiting at a downtown bus stop Portland died of his injuries.

According to a statement released Tuesday by the Portland Police Department, Donald A. Pierce, 82, died in hospital on Thursday night. His death was ruled homicide by blunt force trauma after an autopsy by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Portland agents were responding to an unrelated complaint in the area when they discovered the attack and arrested 29-year-old Keffer White. According to police, White continuously punched and kicked both boys after he knocked them over.

Donald Pierce died of blunt injuries on July 7, about two weeks after he and 88-year-old Edward Lichtenstein were assaulted around 8:30 p.m. near Southwest 5th Avenue and Hall Street.

After allegedly assaulting the two elderly men, the suspected attacker, Keffer White, is already in prison and charged with four charges, including two counts of attempted first-degree murder, one felony of first-degree assault. and one count of second-degree assault. More costs are quite likely.

Prosecutors charged White with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of first and second-degree assault for Pierce’s death. On July 6, he pleaded not guilty to all charges, according to court documents.

Authorities say further charges are pending. Liechtenstein was treated and released from the hospital.

According to court records, White’s next court hearing is scheduled for July 15.
