A one-year-old girl died in a hot car for four hours in Danielsville, Georgia, officials said.
Police on Thursday answered an unresponsive infant call in a car outside the Captain’s store in Walgreens. Jimmy Patton of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office told CBS News. They arrived with her mother to find an unresponsive 1 year old girl.
She was taken to a local hospital where she was sentenced to death, Patton said.
The mother is a Walgreens employee who dropped another child in day care but forgot to drop her one-year-old daughter at another facility. Patton said she unknowingly left her in her car and headed for her job.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating, but no accusations have been filed against the mother. Patton added that the case was being referred to the district attorney for review.
The tragedy occurs days after a father in central Virginia unintentionally puts his 18-month-old son in a hot car for hours and then commits suicide.
“When his father found the dead child in the car, he returned home and took the child into the dwelling, after which he left the dwelling and shot himself,” police said. Said in the release.
Just last week, a five-year-old boy died in a car in Houston, Texas, when temperatures reached three digits. In Georgia, police are investigating the death of a 3-year-old child in what appears to be a similar situation.
The Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Bettes told CBS Evening News anchor and editor-in-chief Nora O’Donnell that if the outside temperature is 100 degrees Celsius, the temperature inside the car will reach 119 degrees Celsius in just 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature inside the car will be 134 degrees. This is “unbearable for small children and pets tied to a child seat.”
