Administration Greg Abbott (R-TX) leads failed presidential candidate and former Congresswoman Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) by eight points in Texas’s governorship race, a CBS/YouGov poll released Thursday showed.

Overall, 49 percent of adult Texas residents said they would vote for Abbott if “the Texas governor election were held” on the day they were polled, while 41 percent said they would vote for the Democratic candidate O’Rourke. Six percent were “not sure,” while four percent said they would vote for another candidate. Abbott has a commanding 25-point lead over O’Rourke when it comes to independent voters, as 55 percent expressed their support for the governor and 30 percent supported the failed U.S. Senate candidate O’Rourke. Eleven percent of independents preferred “someone else” as their candidate, and six percent were “not sure” who they were relying on.

Abbott leads the way in both male and female demographics, 52 percent and 45 percent, respectively, as well as Texans ages 30-44, 45-64, and 65 and older. Figures related to the demographic group 18-29 were not specified in the poll. Of Hispanics, 55 percent chose O’Rourke, over Abbott, who drew 36 percent of the demographic.

Abbott is seeking a third term as governor of the Lone Star State after winning the 2014 and 2018 elections. O’Rourke was the U.S. Representative from the 16th congressional district from 2013-2019. In the 2018 midterm elections, he lost a bid for the United States Senate to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX). He also ran in the Democratic primary for the 2020 presidential election, but failed to land a single delegate.

In the wake of the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, where a gunman killed 19 children and two teachers, O’Rourke crashed an Abbott press conference out of nowhere in what Uvalde mayor Don Mcloughlin called an attempt to score cheap political points. †

“You’re not doing anything,” O’Rourke told the governor.

“He’s got to get his * out of here,” McLoughlin declared. ‘Sir, you’re out of line! Sir, you are out of step! Please leave this room.” “I can’t believe… you are a sick bastard,” the mayor continued, “that would come to an event like this to make political issues.”

The poll polled “1,075 US adult residents in Texas” statewide between June 22 and 27 with a 4.7 percent margin of error.
