Rangers have announced the death of former goalkeeper Andy Goram after losing his battle with cancer.

Rangers revealed in May that Goram had been diagnosed with terminal esophageal cancer and given only six months to live.

Goram initially considered his illness to be indigestion, but after a scan at Monklands Hospital, he was told he had level four esophageal cancer.

The 58-year-old apparently refused chemotherapy after being told it would only give him another 12 weeks, saying he would ‘fight like I’ve never fought before’.

Goram spoke to the Daily Record in May, saying: ‘Take chemotherapy and be in pain for an extra three months and no quality of life? No thank you. Chemotherapy is off the menu.

‘I got other drugs that I did not try to prescribe. To get all these pills at home, how serious is this situation. I have to take my medication religiously or I’m in big trouble. ‘

“My pain is manageable. I can still go see friends and fan clubs and still be myself.

‘I’ll be here as long as I can. I will fight like I have never fought before. The only difference is the time bomb that ticks away. ‘

Goram was loved by Rangers fans and is synonymous with some of the most glorious times in the club’s history. In a fan poll in 1999, Goram was named the greatest Rangers goalkeeper of all time.

He began his professional career at Oldham after coming through the ranks at West Brom before being released as a teenager.

He made nearly 200 league appearances for the Latics after joining the club in 1981, earning himself a £ 325,000 move to Scottish side Hibernian six years later.

After impressing with Hibs for four seasons, Rangers paid £ 1 million to sign Goram in 1991 and he went on to become both their number one.

Such was Goram’s ability to be named the Scottish Footballers’ Association’s Player of the Year for 1992/93.

Goram also won 43 matches for Scotland and was no. 1 at both European Championships in 1992 and 1996.
