Barcelona rule out Frenkie de Jong coming out on top after Cristiano Ronaldo demands retirement

According to widespread reports, Ronaldo wants to be sold if a suitable offer is received this summer, as he wants to continue playing in the Champions League.

Shortly after those reports surfaced, Barca president Joan Laporte told reporters in Spain that De Jong would not be sold and insisted that the player himself did not want to leave.

United have been in talks with Barça over De Jong for weeks and have apparently come close in the past few days to agree on a fee for the midfielder. New manager Erik ten Hag made De Jong his key transfer target in his first summer in charge.

“There are clubs that want him, not just United,” Laporte said on Saturday. “We do not intend to sell him, he wants to stay

“Frenkie is regarded by all the experts as one of the best midfielders in the world. We are glad to have him.

“I will do everything in my power so that Frenkie stays here, but there is also a salary issue and it will have to be adjusted.”
