Rowing Power: This is the most epic way to start a day in Sydney

It’s still dark, the sky is freezing cold and I’m about to get into the sea.

Not exactly in, but on top of the sea, by way of a kayak. What better way to get a feel for Sydney life than a sunrise rowing across the harbor?

I meet Sophie Morgan of OzPaddle at dawn, just before the sky starts to lighten. The former competitive rower rides kayak tours across the harbor.

But for those who want that extra something special, set the clock early to get up when it’s still dark, grab some thermals and get ready to climb out on the water for sunrise.

The dawn rowing begins with a complete safety briefing and Sophie will teach you the best techniques to fly over the sea with as little effort as possible.

Then, after hitting the water as the sky begins to lighten, you expect to increase your rowing to go out just in time in the middle of the harbor to see the little golden glider of the sun appear on the horizon. The sky will turn pink and gold as the ball of light emerges from its slumber, and with it the morning commute will begin to increase by locals.

Rowing past Fort Denison, a former defense facility located on an island in the middle of the harbor, see the Sydney Opera House from a unique angle from the water, as well as gain a fresh perspective on the size of the Sydney Harbor Bridge . The building gets a very different look when viewed from the water.

Expect to ride the strange wave as the Manly Ferry zooms by while locals head for the day’s work, for an extra thrill in the ocean.

This is one of the most invigorating ways to start your day in Sydney.
