Accessible Swing Lift Spirits | Otago Daily Times Online News

Play time is an integral part of every child’s life.

And now it’s more comprehensive at Sacred Heart School.

The new Frisbee Swing will allow the participation of the physically disabled Latiya Haua Corkill-Smith.

She has many challenges, including severe epilepsy called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and delayed development.

Dr. Bronwin Bradshaw said play is a big part of the school and an integral part of Tamariki’s well-being.

Principal Ellen Devany said its purpose was to ensure access for all.

“During breaks, the playground is always busy with groups of children, before, during, and after school, providing everyone with a play opportunity.”

Previously, Latiya couldn’t use other playsets, but now she can enjoy playing with her friends.

This has had a direct benefit not only to her and the school, but also to the wider community who frequently use the facility.

At the Ribbon Cut Ceremony last week, Ms. Devany explained the background to the swing’s installation, and school children sang Wiata before Father Aidan Cunningham gave a blessing. The ribbon was then cut by Latiya’s cousin student Ariana Percy.

The swing was funded with the support of Sport New Zealand, Sport Otago, Tu Manawa Active Aotearoa, Alexander McMillan Trust and Bendigo Valley Sports and Charity Foundation.
