Kitchen of the Week: One Designer Scoops All Three Big NKBA Awards

It happened for the first time last year, and it happened again. One National Kitchen & Bathroom Association (NKBA) designer has won all three awards at the 2022 NKBA Excellence in Design National Awards.

Following in the footsteps of last year’s Davinia Sutton, this year’s Dubois Design Auckland’s Natalie Dubois has clearly won. Du Bois has won NKBA Excellence in the Design Supreme Kitchen and Supreme Bathroom and has been selected as the Designer of the Year.

Du Bois’s award-winning kitchen is a large, modern industrial design for a family of five. There is a bar dedicated to entertainment and a butler’s pantry.

“The fascinating layering effect on island cladding is extraordinary, as is the very chic lighting and the soft veneer on the back wall. This space is affected. It’s tactile and well-performed. increase.

“Features such as folded metal shelves, island details, and how light is regenerated across layers are a lot of fun. It’s incredibly difficult to be original in the kitchen space, but this designer said We’ve achieved this. It’s great, “they said.

Dubois chose a combination of materials to create an industrial look. Concrete is a pioneer, and plastered concrete is used for the walls. The island has a sturdy concrete Caesarstone island bench top with strips of various sizes wrapped around the back and sides of the island.

“This effect was designed to create a visually interesting central focus in the room,” says Dubois.

NKBA elite designer Dubois has won even more awards. Her award-winning kitchen not only won the highest award, but also her Designer of the Year, DNKBA Kitchen Design-Elite / Platinum Award, and Auckland Chapter Awards.

There are also two Supreme Kitchen Joint Runner-up winners from Auckland – Morgan Cronin from Cronin Kitchens and Leonie Hamill from Cube Inside.

Kitchen remodeling is the winner

Cronin also won the Kitchen Distinction Award for a project over $ 120,000 for this kitchen, which was part of a major refurbishment.

Morgan Cronin's Broadhurst Kitchen was Supreme Kitchen Design Joint Runner-Up. The kitchen combines natural stone bench tops with light wood and wooden floors.

The family demanded up to eight seats and the incorporation of many large appliances. I also liked the natural stone bench top, along with the requirement that the new floor be light and natural oak.

Due to the size of the space and to make the layout more practical, the kitchen has been divided into three zones – a centerpiece, a dedicated entertainment zone, and a scullery.

The jury described it as “a very balanced kitchen with beautiful symmetry and asymmetry that is difficult to achieve.”

Large skylights allow plenty of natural light into the kitchen. The double oven and ample bench space make it easy to accommodate the crowd.

“Subtle changes in the level of the kitchen island and a carefully considered approach to flooring and cabinet tones reveal subtle attention to detail.

“Simpleness worked well with a gorgeous finish. Planning and documentation are very professional.”

Clonin also won another Kitchen Distinction Award for kitchens between $ 90,000 and $ 120,000.

The winner is Kronburn’s villa, which was relocated from the Moving House series.

Designer Leonie Hamill’s own home project is another Supreme Kitchen Runner-Up. This is the relocation and restoration of a large and beautiful villa from Kronburn Road in Remuela to the countryside of the Awitz Peninsula.

The project also won the Outstanding Renovation Kitchen Award.

The refurbishment required designers to maintain the villa atmosphere, redefine the awkward layout and create innovative entertainment spaces.

The original hardwood floor remains the same, but the custom-made cabinets blend in with the characteristics of the bygone era and are combined with the new French door fittings. The marble landscape connects to the sea and provides a sense of movement and waves. And elegant, curved marble countertops and bases divide the large islands, providing visual impact and nimbleness.

The sink and wall-mounted tapware are unobtrusive, but they are part of the design story and are meant to keep the countertop straight and crisp. The marble splashback contrasts with the island’s countertops.

Viva La Villa, as the name suggests, also features a beautiful marble splashback.

The judges called it a “kitchen cracker” when announcing this award.

“This design has taken a lot of consideration and has undergone difficult refurbishment. Previously it was small and closed. It is now a vast entertainer’s space. The design is an island of sculpture. It incorporates interesting and quirky shapes, such as the details of the and its brilliant legs. This is a sophisticated kitchen with artistic quality. Knockout. “
