Reconnecting the general goals of the community

The Greater Green Island Community Network (GGICN) is working to reset the priorities of ongoing community development with the help of feedback from locals.

As a follow-up to the 2016 successful community survey, which began work leading to roundabouts and the establishment of community playgrounds in the community, the network launched a new survey in late 2020.

Workers in the GGICN community, Ben McKenzie and Alana Goldsack, said the Covid-19 pandemic delayed the task of analyzing the results of 409 survey respondents, but the survey was still a useful exercise. ..

“The purpose of this study was to give an opinion to the community, to know their wishes for the community, and to see what has changed since the last survey, especially because we are in another world now,” McKenzie said. Mr. says. ..

This delay allowed the network to also include information about the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Respondents to the survey were overwhelmingly positive about the Greater Green Island community, with 95% fond of living in the area and 84% feeling a strong sense of belonging.

Areas of concern included lack of access to services such as banking, fast food and government services, traffic safety, speed around roads and schools, and the need for sidewalk upgrades and beautification.

There were 14 intersections, or roads, and there were safety concerns.

Ms. Goldsack said residents really want more events after a two-year cancellation so they can reconnect with their neighbors and the wider community.

“There is a real desire to connect with the community and have a say in what is happening to people.

“So we are keen to find better and more creative ways to connect and communicate,” she said.

McKenzie said Green Island’s business was affected by road construction on the main street, which was affecting residents who depended on them.

“Personally, I think a lot of people will be happy with the result once the road construction is done,” he said.

The results of the survey helped inform plans for future work in the area, including community events, traffic safety, support for active transportation, beautification of the area, and ongoing work at the Green Island Memorial Gardens. increase.

“We look forward to moving into the second half of this year and continuing to return to normal,” he said.
