A 24-year-old UPS driver has died of heat stroke in his truck while he was delivering, according to his family.
The delivery man fell off the seat in his vehicle and was found unconscious in the truck just after dropping off a package in Southern California, officials say.
Esteban Chavez Jr. was discovered unresponsive on June 25, about 20 minutes after passing out in the vehicle, according to local KTLA news reports.
He was found by the person whose house he had just delivered packages to, who then called the emergency responders.
By the time they got to the scene, Chavez couldn’t be rescued.
“He fell off his seat in the truck,” the man’s father, Esteban Chavez Sr., told reporters. to KTLA.
“By the time someone realized it, it was the owner of the house where he delivered the package, and that was about 20 minutes after my son had already collapsed,” he continued.
“By the time the first responders arrived, it was clearly a little too late.”
From his father’s perspective, the heat killed his son, who was nicknamed “lil Stevie” according to the family’s GoFundMe site.
The temperature was in the 90s on the day Chavez Jr. died.
“Everyone knows it’s pretty hot there, those trucks are a hot box,” Chavez told the local news station.
“They all have guys running around, delivering packages and trying to hit their quota and do their job.”
No official cause of death has been established and, according to ABC 7, is still under investigation by the local authorities and the medical examiner.
The driver’s tragic death came the day after he celebrated his 24th birthday.
According to KTLA, he was unemployed with a shoulder injury, but was back at work on Saturday.
UPS has released a statement in response to the death of Chavez Jr.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our driver Esteban Chavez and extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends,” the KTLA statement said.
“We are cooperating with the investigating authorities and respectfully deferring questions about this incident to them.”
Chavez Jr. reportedly started working for UPS four years ago.
