Major Westland’s Bruce Smith is no longer in crisis, the family says

Mayor Bruce Smith of the Westland district is “around the corner,” so his family says it’s no longer in crisis.

Smith’s health deteriorated in mid-May and was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital.

A Facebook post from Smith’s family this week, shared by the Westland District Council, said he was “slowly improving every day.”

Smith had a long way to go, saying he would continue to be hospitalized.

“But if someone can do it, our warrior can do it. He is the strongest and most positive person we know.”

Smith decided not to support the mayor of Westland again before the health problems arose. Instead, he publicly said he intends to run for the West Coast Regional Council.

It is unclear if he still represents the local council.
