World Award for Deer Milk from Southern Farms

Deer milk from a farm in eastern Southland won an award in an international dairy contest.

Last month, at the World Dairy Innovation Awards in Laval, France, Pamdia Milk from Pukelau’s Benio Farm and Pam Farm Aratiatia in the Central Plateau of the North Island won two awards.

Milk has won the highest dairy category in its Doe Nutrition food supplements and was highly rated in the highest functional dairy category.

Peter McIntyre, co-owner of Benio Farms, said it was good that the family’s products made from Red Deer’s “beautiful” milk continued to win the award.

“They got quite a few — that’s good.”

The supply of deer milk from the farm remains the same until demand increases.

“We have done everything we can. We need to find more markets and then we can expand.”

Mark Leslie, CEO of Pam, said the award is a testament to the efforts made to create entirely new products for the agricultural sector.

“Our deer dairy products are steadily gaining popularity among high-end chefs and are currently exclusively sold at the Yuhan New Origin store in South Korea as a unique new ingredient in cosmetics.”

He said the company was excited about the potential of deer milk and opened a new milking facility near Taupo to supplement the existing supply from McIntyre.

He said the growing awareness of the unique properties of Pam deer milk, especially with regard to nutrition and digestion, indicates that it may contribute to New Zealand’s major sectors.
