Warning: Spoilers ahead for Mrs. Marvel episode 5.
The latest episode of Mrs. Marvel has a much more detailed account of Kamala’s (Iman Velani) ancestors than she knew beforerevealing the hardships they endured during the partition.
The story has been dubbed “emotional” and “so powerful” by fans…although some have puzzled over the laws of time travel and how they conform to the previously established rules in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
With only one episode to go – with the season finale starting Disney Plus next week – it will be intriguing to see how this week’s cliffhanger will be resolved, especially the newfound abilities Kamran (Rish Shah) has been given.
We can’t wait to see Kamala make it to the grand finale!
Kamala’s Family History Revealed
Throughout the show, Kamala’s family history has been discussed, although certain details of the story have been shrouded in mystery.
When episode five started, it seemed possible that the entire episode would focus solely on Kamala’s early 1940s ancestors in British-ruled India.
The opening moments of the episode included a segment on the partition, before moving on to the show – following in the footsteps of Kamala’s great-grandmother, Aisha (Mehwish Hayat).
In episode three, Kamala learned that Aisha was part of a group called Clandestines, or Djinn, who had been banned from the Noor dimension.
In episode five, Aisha is sleeping alone on the floor when she is discovered by a man named Hasan (Fawad Khan).
After Aisha initially gives Hasan the cold shoulder, the couple eventually fall in love, get married and welcome their daughter, Sana, Kamala’s grandmother.
Years later, when Sana is still a child, Aisha is forced to face Najma (Nimra Bucha), another clandestine who wants to use the bracelet to return to their dimension.
Aisha and Hasan flee with Sana, along with dozens of other people trying to get to Pakistan during the partition.
What are the laws of time travel in the MCU?
In Avengers: Endgame, it is made clear that the laws of time travel are not what many of the superheroes initially thought, as they travel back in time to retrieve Infinity Stones to undo the Blip caused by Thanos.
If they go back to the past, it’s not that if they change something, their present will change.
If something has changed in the past, it is more likely to create a new timeline that branches from the original timeline because there are many parallel timelines taking place at the same time.
However, this rule seems to have been ignored in the latest episode of Ms. Marvel, as several fans pointed out.
After Najma pierces Kamala’s bracelet, the teenage superhero is transported to the time of separation in 1940s British-ruled India, when countless people try to board the last train to Karachi, Pakistan.
Kamala’s great-grandmother, Aisha, is stabbed by Najma, while her daughter Sana – Kamala’s grandmother who is only a little girl at the time – is separated from her father, Hasan, Kamala’s great-grandfather.
The story in Kamala’s family has it that Sana followed a ‘trail of stars’ to be reunited with her father, sparking speculation that Aisha helped reunite her daughter and husband before disappearing herself.
However, it turns out that the trail of stars was actually created by Kamala when she was transported to that moment and helped Sana after finding the lost little girl.
According to the logic of Avengers: Endgame, this should mean that Kamala created a new timeline where she was involved in saving her grandmother… but this doesn’t seem to be the case.
As such, many fans were confused, with one tweet: ‘Ermmmmmmm how did Kamala travel back to the past and save her own grandmother??? MCU has already established that time travel doesn’t work that way in this universe…’
“I liked the alternate timeline/alternate universe idea of time travel, but I’ve always hated ‘closed loop’ time travel. Marvel can better expand on this in future projects and sell it to me. How do both types exist in the MCU?’ another wrote.
Another commented, “I just need an explanation for how time travel works because my brain can’t comprehend the complexity,” while another speculated that the creators of Ms. Marvel dropped a clue that time travel might be involved when Kamala’s best friend Bruno (Matt Lintz ) was dressed in an outfit that resembled Marty McFly from Back to the Future.
There’s a new super-powered creature in town
Kamala is not the only one with luminescent abilities, it has been revealed.
After the veil is opened and one of the clandestine is killed, Kamala urges Najma to close the veil and encourages her to reunite with her son Kamran.
Najma then indeed changes her mind, but sacrifices herself to close the veil, seemingly transferring powers to Kamran.
Kamran goes to Bruno’s house as a refuge, but discovers that he has been followed by a drone.
It is there that he first displays the full power of his powers, shocking Bruno to find that he is near yet another super-powered creature.
Ms Marvel is available to watch on Disney Plus with new episodes set to be released on Wednesday.
