Dutch protest: police ‘shoot’ at tractors gathering at the Dutch border | World | News

In images posted on Twitter, the police appear to be shooting directly at the vehicle. The protests were fueled by plans to cut fertilizer and livestock use by as much as 70 percent. The Dutch government states that the cuts are necessary to reduce nitrogen oxide and ammonia emissions by 50 percent by 2030.

These cutbacks may mean that some farms in the Netherlands have to close. Farmers have staged mass protests in response to block supermarkets, distribution centers and even an airport.

In the video, a tractor pulls up the road in the direction of several police vehicles.

As the tractor passes the police vehicles, an officer appears to draw his weapon and fire two shots directly into the side of the tractor.

Police later confirmed that officers had fired at tractor-driving protesters, but no one was injured.

Some of them have blocked roads with their tractors, while others set fire to hay bales along the highways. Others have gathered in major cities to protest.

The farmers claim they are being treated unfairly, while other industries, such as aviation and transportation, are allowed to continue to pollute.

They also claim that other EU countries are not tackling farmers’ emissions as hard as the Dutch government.
