Kate Garraway‘s husband Derek Draper is back in the hospital after his prolonged battle with Covid-19.

The 55-year-old presenter of Good Morning Britain has shared the ups and downs of her husband’s illness.

Derek, also 55, was first hospitalized with Covid in March 2020 and spent more than a year in the hospital before being discharged last April.

Covid affected Derek’s ability to communicate, causing damage to many of his organs.

He’s back in the hospital now, but Kate assures him he’s ‘okay’.

Speaking at the Tric Awards in London on Wednesday, she responded to a question from: The sun About Derek: ‘He’s okay, he’s actually back in the hospital, so that’s a development. There we are.’

Kate and the two children she shares with Derek – Darcey, 16 and Billy, 12 – have adapted to a new way of life amid Derek’s Covid struggle, documenting his journey in two ITV documentaries – Finding Derek and the continued, Caring For Dirk.

Recently, they shared that they had to “relearn” their relationship with him since “so much has changed.”

The host of Life Stories told Good Housekeeping magazine“When you almost lose someone, everything comes into focus,” she said. “In many ways we are still learning what we are like as husband and wife because so much has changed.

“It’s the same for the children – they have to relearn the experience of being with their father. And of course the biggest learning curve is for poor Derek.”

The former employment counselor required round-the-clock care on his return from hospital, with Kate completely transforming their family home to ensure it met his needs.

Since then, he has only been seen outside the house a few times.
