Victoria Street in South Bank has been closed off after reports of a “suspicious package”.
Police are reportedly on the scene.
Officers arrived at the property around 3:10 p.m. and cordoned off the area.
A police spokesperson said: “A barrier has been placed as a precaution and officers will remain on the scene until they are satisfied that people can continue on their way safely.
“We would like to ask local residents to avoid the area if possible while emergency services work to bring the incident to a safe end as soon as possible.”
One resident told Teesside Live: “I came back at 4am and there were police everywhere blocking the street.
“I just said it was for our own safety.”
The explosives disposal experts arrived at the scene around 4.50 pm.
