The Duke of Sussex asks for authorization to review Home Office security decision

t

the first stage of the Duke of Sussex’s claim against the Home office about his police protection in the UK will be heard on the Supreme Court

Harry is pursuing legal action over a decision not to allow him to pay for police protection for himself and his family while in the UK.

The Duke wants to visit his children from the US, but he and his family “cannot return to his house” because it is too dangerous, a representative said earlier.

Harry’s lawyers will ask Mr Justice Fast during a hearing in London on Thursday to authorize a full judicial review of the Interior Ministry’s decision.

The judge ruled in March that parts of the court documents in the case must remain private.

Harry is challenging the February 2020 decision of the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalties and Public Figures (Ravec) over his security, after being told he would no longer receive the same level of personal protection when visiting.

The Duke’s lawyer, Shaheed Fatima QC, previously told the court that Harry considers the UK “his home and always will be”.

A Harry representative previously said the Duke wants to fund the security himself, rather than asking taxpayers to foot the bill.

However, Robert Palmer, QC, of the Department of the Interior, previously told the court that the Duke’s offer of private funding was “irrelevant”.

In written comments, he said: “Police personal protective security is not available on a privately funded basis, and Ravec does not make any decisions about providing such assurance on the basis that a financial contribution may be requested or obtained in order to pay for it.”

The consent hearing begins at 10:30 a.m.
