I’m a mom and save pro – Poundland is not always the cheapest, here’s how to save hundreds

DESPITE its name, Poundland may not be the cheapest place to pick up bargains one mom has revealed.

Holly Smith, a self-confessed coupon queen, said cheap prices are not always what they seem.

The 37-year-old mom of four regularly shares her shopping tips and is behind the popular Extreme Couponing and Bargains Facebook page.

Holly previously shared how to save cash when shopping at Aldi, KFC and H&M or even get items for FREE.

And she recently unveiled the simple changes you can make to your grocery store, which can save you £ 555 by the end of the year.

Now she shares her secrets on how to shop at Poundland – and avoid paying more.

She told The Mirror: “A lot of people shop at Poundland because they think it’s the cheapest budget store.”

“But if you look at some of their prices, you will learn that £ 1 is not always a bargain.”

Holly said items like dishwashing liquid and bleach are among those she can get cheaper at Tesco.

But branded items are among those that might be cheaper in the discount store.

A difference of 6p in dishwashing liquid can add up to £ 3.12 if you bought a bottle week.

It may seem small, but on multiple products and your weekly store, the price difference can add up to hundreds of pounds each year, she warned.

Holly advises buyers to check before buying to make sure they are getting the best deal.

Using comparison sites like Kelkoo, PriceSpy, Google Shopping and PriceRunner means you can find the lowest price for an item online.

The LatestDeals app has a supermarket price comparison feature that includes all the major supermarkets like Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Aldi.

Meanwhile, Trolley.co.uk will tell you where to find the cheapest groceries, including B&M, Aldi and Tesco.

Holly has previously told The Sun what your best chance is of making bargains at Poundland after holidays and events such as Christmas and Easter.

This is when the store in the main street tries to shift seasonal inventory to make room for new products.

She also shared that Poundland sometimes has baskets with discount items at checkout – so hear first to get the best discount.

Holly also recommended using refund sites when shopping online and in-store with applications like CheckOutSmart and Shopmium.

They work in a similar way by listing products sold in major supermarkets where you can get some, or all, of your cash back when you buy it.

All you have to do is take a picture of your receipt, upload it to the application and the cash will end up in your account.

“You get loads of free stuff – you can easily get £ 30 worth of stuff for free every week,” she said recently on ITV’s This Morning.

  • Use the TooGoodToGo app to pack cheap food from restaurants and supermarkets like Greggs and Morrisons for much less
