Clothing
Mosquitoes are attracted to people who wear dark clothes, so switch to something more colorful once the warm weather kicks in.
You may also want to consider layering to further protect your skin – although this can be quite difficult depending on your location and temperature.
If the heat permits, wear a jacket when hiking, especially near standing water.
Avoid wearing strong perfumes, as these scents can attract mosquitoes.
Deterrents
There are a number of deterrents you can use to discourage mosquitoes from coming near you.
Lavender might be one of the best natural mosquito repellentswith a 2009 study showing that lavender oil had a 93% repellent against indoor mosquitoes and about 53% repellent against outdoor mosquitoes.
Stephanie says she switched to a lavender and mint shampoo and conditioner.

Citronella grass can repel these annoying buzzers, but it can also be toxic to pets, so it may not be the best option for you.
Stephanie suggests lemon balm, basil, and rosemary for a pet-friendly, mosquito-free zone.
