There were calls that he had to leave parliamenteven from the MPs he had brought in to fill the gaps in the cabinet.

Chaos broke then Chancellor Rishi Sunak published his letter of resignation, which read: “We can’t go on like this”.

This was quickly followed by Health Secretary Sajid Javid and a torrent of layoffs and the resignation of Michael Gove.

Concerns arose as Johnson seemed unwilling to leave in the first 24 hours of the run, instead looking to shake the cabinet.

He was criticized by his newly appointed chancellor Nadhim Zahawi and a 36 hour orbit of Education Secretary Michelle Donelan.

This inevitably forced Johnson, as he could not move forward to form a government without government ministers.

It was announced that Johnson would resign on July 7, 2022, as Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister.

Will there be a general election?

It is not thought that there is a general election because this can only be called as the Queen Parliament dissolves.

Instead, a Tory leadership contest will follow for the election of the next Prime Minister.

This means that the 1922 Committee will vote for the party to decide their next leader.

There is no public vote on who gets elected will remain prime minister for the rest of the term until the next general electionn in January 2025.

Johnson can stay on as a caretaker until it is decided who should take his position.

labor leader Keir Starmer said: “We cannot continue with this prime minister clinging on for months and months.”
