Wimbledon 2022 has served up some stunning action this year, with some of the biggest names in the game both rising and crashing.
British Favorites Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu both had broken off their Wimbledon dreams early in the tournament, while Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal still have a chance to reach the final.
Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios – who will face Nadal in the small final – also caused a stir at the tournament with his fashion choices, for which he was fined for wearing red shoes on the field.
It has brought to light that Wimbledon has strict rules when it comes to what players can wear while playing – but what exactly is the dress code for tennis players?
What is the dress code for tennis players at Wimbledon?
The official rules for Wimbledon Championship players, state players are required to wear ‘appropriate tennis clothing that is almost all white’ from the moment they step onto the field.
There may be some exceptions to this rule, where you are not allowed to wear certain garments, but it must be on ‘the neckline of the shirt, cuff or outer seam of shorts, skirts or shorts’ and not more than an inch wide.
Small logos of manufacturers and sponsors are also allowed, but again the rule of one centimeter applies. However, logos formed by variations of material or patterns are not acceptable.
It also states that ‘caps, headbands, bandanas, wristbands and socks’ must follow the same rules, while shoes must also be predominantly white, with large manufacturer logos ‘not encouraged’.
The code also states that ‘general standards of decency are required at all times’ and that ‘any undergarment that is either visible or may be exposed during play (including through perspiration) must also be completely white, except for a single band of color which is not wider. may be. than an inch.’
Why do Wimbledon players have to wear white?
‘Tennis whites’ at Wimbledon are said to date back to the 1800s.
The tournament was launched in 1877 and in this Victorian era it was believed that white would be the ideal color for players to wear.
White clothing would prevent or minimize sweat stains on the players’ clothing and be ‘cooling’, it was thought.
However, the rules about what constituted an appropriate white outfit weren’t always so strict.
Clothing guidelines were updated in 1963, and again in 1995, before the 10-part clothing and equipment decree was issued in 2014.
Of course, Wimbledon viewers don’t have to wear white. It’s just a rule for players on the field.
Some exceptions have been made this year, such as: Ukraine Lesia Tsurenko wore a blue and yellow ribbon as she went to Court 12 for her match against compatriot Anhelina Kalinina – with the All England Club easing its all-white rule for 2022.
