When are they, where are they held and how do I get tickets?

The Commonwealth Games will return to England for the first time in two decades, hosted by Birmingham after Durban was stripped of the event due to financial difficulties. Here’s everything you need to know about this summer’s Games.

What is it?

The 22nd Commonwealth Games, an international multi-sport event for athletes from the Commonwealth countries. The Games will return to England for the first time since 2002 in Manchester. At the time, however, they were held in the UK – Glasgow hosted the 2014 edition.

Where is it held?

Birmingham is this year’s host city, with the revamped Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr hosting the athletics. Other events are spread across the West Midlands, including swimming at the purpose-built Sandwell Aquatics Centre. Some cycling events are held in London’s Lee Valley VeloPark.

When does it start?

The 2022 Commonwealth Games will run from Thursday, July 28 to Monday, August 8.

Are there still tickets available?

Yes, you can still buy tickets to many of the events here. For some sports, including swimming, mountain biking, time trial and road race, artistic gymnastics, and both triathlon and paratriathlon, only resale tickets are available. There is availability for all other sports.

Three-time Olympic swimming champion Adam Peaty faces a race against time to be fit for the Commonwealth Games, but the 27-year-old says he has the training and experience behind him to return to top form.

England’s Peaty, eight-time world champion and holder of the 50m and 100m breaststroke world titles, withdrew from this month’s world championships after breaking his right foot in the gym in May.

Peaty will have little time to prepare for the Games after his time in a protective boot is up.

“When I get out of the trunk I have four and a half weeks – it’s not long to prepare well for a championship, but if someone can do it, I can do it,” said Peaty.

“That’s not being arrogant – I’m just confident. I know I’ve got the fitness, I know I’ve got the background, I know I’ve got 17 years of hardcore training behind me. It’s just about getting those feet up can get technically.
