Winter is here, but for Canterbury it’s already drier than usual.

In just a few days from the end of June, the garden city had only 36.6 millimeters of rain in a month, according to MetService forecaster Gerard Bellam. This is just over half the monthly average of 61.1 millimeters.

This is below the average rainfall recorded in March, April and May.

“There was a more eastern and northeastern stream that brought rain to the north and east of the country, but Canterbury with the La Niña weather pattern is protected there,” Vellum said.

However, Christchurch is likely to rain next week thanks to the active fronts up the South Island, Mr. Vellum said.

It will rain as the southern changes happened on Monday evening and Tuesday.

It could snow up to 700 meters on the Banks Peninsula, but more reliably on the Southern Alps, Mount Hutt and Porters Pass.

Vellum said it was okay again on Wednesday, but rain was expected at the end of Thursday.

The lively fronts that bring about this rain have triggered weather warnings. Heavy snow is monitored on the Canterbury Plateau, and heavy rain is monitored on Fiordland and Westland.

There are road snow warnings on Milford Road, Crown Range Road, and Lindis Pass, which can cause heavy snow above 700m and light snow at 500-700m.

On Sunday, temperatures in Christchurch reach 15.6 degrees Celsius, and mercury is expected to drop to 2 degrees Celsius overnight. The highest temperature on Monday is 14C and the lowest temperature is 5C.

Christchurch was expected to reach 14 ° C on Monday.
