Kate revealed in an interview on the Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast what George, eight, and Charlotte, seven, asked her before leaving for a royal visit. Asked by host Giovanna Fletcher if she struggles with maternal debt, Kate said: “Yes, absolutely. I think anyone who doesn’t as a mother is actually lying. Yes, all the time.

“Even this morning before I went to visit the nursery, George and Charlotte said, ‘Mommy, how can you not drop us off at school this morning?’ No, [Mum-guilt is] a constant challenge.

“You hear it over and over from mothers. You always question your own decisions and your own judgment. I think that starts from the moment you have a baby.

“I feel a huge responsibility. What I’ve learned over the past few years is so fascinating and I certainly would have done things, even during my pregnancy, differently than I would have done now, knowing how important the early years are.”

While there is a personal element to Kate’s work, given that she is the mother of four-year-old George, Charlotte and Louis, she has been interested in her concerns about early childhood’s impact on adulthood for some time.

The Duchess told the podcast: “What we experience in childhood really does have a lifelong impact on our future health and happiness. That really sparked my interest in the landscape of the early years.”

In June 2021, Kate launched The Royal Foundation Center for Early Childhood in June of last year to raise awareness of the impact of the early years.

Kate’s interest started more than 10 years ago when she met people rebuilding their lives after a family breakup and poor mental health.

The Duchess, speaking of her own upbringing and how she was raised, said: “I had a very happy childhood. I am very lucky to come from a very strong family.

“My parents were very devoted to us, my brothers and sisters. I appreciate now, as a parent, how much they sacrificed for us.

“They came to every sports game. We always had our family vacations together. The things that really resonate with me are the simple things. I see that even now with my own kids.

“Life is so busy right now, so distracting. And sometimes the simple things like watching a fire on a really rainy day are such a pleasure. It takes all the pressure off completely.”

Kate told the podcast when she had severe morning sickness during all three of her pregnancies.

She said: “I’m not the happiest of all pregnant people… A lot of people have it much, much worse. But it was certainly a challenge, not only for me, but also for your loved ones around you.

“It’s hard for anyone to see you suffer without being able to do anything about it.”

Kate revealed in the podcast that she had hypnobirthing which aims to reduce anxiety, pain and anxiety in childbirth.

She told the podcast, which first aired in January, “I realized this was something I could take control of during labour. It was really powerful.

“And actually because it had been so bad during the pregnancy, I actually quite liked the delivery because it was an event that I knew would come to an end. But it’s not for everyone.”

The Duchess of Cambridge hosted a roundtable in June on the importance of early childhood development and its link to mental health.

In addition to The Royal Foundation Center for Early Childhood, she met the then Minister of Health Sajid Javid, the then Minister of Families Will Quince, representatives of the early childhood sector and officials from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health and Social Care.

The discussion focused on findings from the center that found that nine in 10 agree that early years are important in shaping children’s lives, although less than a fifth recognize the unique importance of children’s development from birth. until the age of five.

Kate said: “Our early childhood experiences have a fundamental impact on all of our lives and are the foundation for how we can continue to thrive as individuals, with each other, as a community and as a society.

“The findings… present us with a huge opportunity and demonstrate a real interest from the public in putting this issue on all of our agendas.

“There is more we can all do – every member of society can play a key role, whether that be directly with a child or by investing in the adults around them – the parents, the carers, the young workforce and more .”
