The mayor of a small village in Mexico married an alligator in a “very beautiful tradition”.

Victor Hugo Sosa, mayor of San Pedro Huamelula in Oaxaca, married a reptile dressed in a wedding dress last Thursday, June 30, in a colorful ceremony.

The reptile’s jaw was tied together to prevent calamities during the wedding.

The alligator was then paraded through the village, carried by the locals as men lined the streets to blow off the newlyweds with their hats.

The bizarre marriage is thought to be centuries old and a tradition of the Chontal and Huave indigenous communities in the state of Oaxaca.

The ceremony is linked to nature and good harvests.

“We’re asking nature for enough rain, enough food, that we have fish in the river,” Sosa said.

The seven-year-old reptile is considered a deity representing Mother Earth. Her marriage to a local leader is meant to symbolize the unity between man and the divine.

She was called “Little Princess” by wedding guests.
