Lewis Hamilton condemns Christian Horner’s claims Mercedes screwed up Silverstone GP and is confident he will win this year’s race

LEWIS HAMILTON laughed off Christian Horner’s suggestion that his Mercedes team was blowing his chances of winning the British GP – but expects his drought to end soon.

Hamilton is on his longest run ever without tasting a win, 11 races in all, but the 37-year-old is confident he will be back on the top step of the podium.

When asked whether a victory over silverstone was torpedoed by his Mercedes team – as per Red Bull boss Horner’s suggestion, Hamilton, who finished third, said: “I don’t really pay much attention to what that guy says [Horner]†

“Did we do it perfectly? Who knows? But I think we made the right decision and it was a great weekend overall.

“It was really positive for us to see a bit of consistency and to see progress.

“We were a long way back earlier this year. I was absolutely not sure that we would win with this car.

“For a long, long time we would make changes and not see it do what it says it would do and improve the car.

“But we’ve just had these last two races, which have been pretty strong, and that really encourages us in the right direction.

“Hopefully with a little more digging and a little more hard work we can get closer to winning a race, so I really believe we can win a race this year.”

Hamilton, who has won a race in each of his 15 previous seasons in F1, and while encouraged by his team’s improvements at Montreal and Silverstone, admits victory in Formula 1. Red Bull Ring in Austria maybe a little push this weekend.

Both Red Bull and Ferrari have faster cars and should be more suited to the characteristics of the track.

He added: “With our current performance we are not at exactly the same level as the two teams ahead of us.

“Everything happens with a reason.

“It was Carlos Sainz’s weekend and it was written that he would get his first win there, which I am very happy for him.

“When we come here, we have always had a hard time in Austria, so it will be difficult to win here if we know the combination of corners, but not impossible.

“The weather is changeable. The best thing you can do is arrive hopeful and positive and navigate from there.”
