A prime suspect in the shooting of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was arrested on July 7, 2022.
Abe was campaigning for parliamentary elections when he was allegedly shot by Tetsuya Yamagami.
Yamagami is a 41-year-old man from Nara who served with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force for three years before resigning from the job in 2005.
His reasons for shooting the former prime minister are still unknown.
Yamagami is said to have told authorities that he “wanted to commit murder” when he fired his gun at Abe, causing him to go into cardiac arrest.
Bystanders heard two shots go off and Abe collapsed with a shot to the left side of his chest and neck.
Abe later died in hospital and Yamagami was arrested on the spot.
Japanese police say Yamagami “held no grudge against Abe’s political beliefs.”
