With workers fleeing conditions in the Zhengzhou iPhone Chinese state media say Foxconn has only two-thirds of the workforce it needs.

The number of employees at Foxconn rises and falls dramatically throughout the year as demand for iPhone production peaks in the months of August/September. This year, however, workers have fled conditions at the headquarters in Zhengzhou.

Now, according to the South China Morning MailThis is reported by Chinese state media Foxconn needs 100,000 additional workers to resume full production capacity in Zhengzhou.

Chinese authorities all questions ex-military retirees to join the factory, and conducts other recruiting efforts. The South China Morning Mail says these have proved ineffective, however, citing a recruitment campaign in Taikang province, near the factory, as an example.

Taikang is said to have a population of 1.5 million, and recruiters have aimed to bring 10,000 workers from the region. However, so far they have only recruited 2,000.

Foxconn’s factory in Zhengzhou is estimated to have about 200,000 employees, so the required additional 100,000 means capacity is a third below capacity.

Foxconn has partly because of the corona measures taken by the Chinese state increased iPhone production – and employment – at the factory in India. It is not known whether that increase will be enough to compensate for the deficit in China.
