Those with iPhones and iPads can now watch YouTube videos while browsing other apps, but there’s one caveat.
Announced on Monday, YouTube will begin rolling out the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature to iPhones and iPads in the coming days.
The feature is available for devices that are active iOS 15 and iPad OS 15 and allows users to watch YouTube content outside of the app in a movable window.
However, there is one caveat. Non-premium members can access the non-music content feature.
To use it to access music on YouTube, you need to subscribe to YouTube Premium. YouTube explains how to access the feature:
In general, all Premium members on iPhone and iPad can access PiP for all content (both music and non-music). To enable the feature, go to Settings > General in your YouTube app and toggle Picture -in in -image.”
If a user does not enable the feature, the music will continue to play in the background without a PiP window appearing.
To use Picture-in-Picture, go to a YouTube video and start playing it. Then exit the app by swiping up from the bottom of the screen or pressing the home button. PiP windows are movable so you can place them wherever you want.
