The number of New Zealanders leaving the country is expected to increase as the borders reopen.

A study by MYOB showed that: 4% of those surveyed said they had decided to move abroad. Another 20% are considering it.

The number of arrivals of 4900 migrants in the month of May was 6% lower than in May 2021, while the number of departures of 5700 fell 9%.

Infometrics economist Brad Olsen said the 42% drop in New Zealand citizens’ domestic migration and the 14% increase in New Zealand citizens’ annual departures reinforced his view that there was a “brain drain.” from local talent.

“The numbers also amplify the pressure on the workforce to accommodate all of the work currently on the books.”
