Heathrow cancels 1,000 summer flights amid chronic staff shortage

Heathrow is forcing airlines to cancel more than 1,000 flights this summer amid chronic staff shortages.

The airport has set a limit of 100,000 people per day that can fly from today until September 11.

It follows a similar move earlier this summer by Gatwick to limit the number of flights it can operate.

John Holland-Kaye, CEO of Heathrow: “New colleagues are learning fast, but are not yet at full speed. However, there are some critical functions at the airport that are still significantly under-resourced, most notably ground handlers, who have been hired by airlines to provide check-in staff, load and unload bags and turn over planes.

“They are doing their very best with the resources available and we are giving them as much support as possible, but this is a significant limitation on the overall capacity of the airport.”
