Do not change leadership rules to oust Boris Johnson, warns David Davis Tory rebels

B.Oris Johnson has been hit by a new wave of letters of no confidence after saying he was planning for a third term in Downing Street, Tory rebels said last night (you can read the full story here).

The rebels plan to try to change the rules of the 1922 committee so that Mr. Johnson faces another vote of confidence this year (current rules mean the PM cannot be challenged for 12 months).

David Davis, the former Brexit secretary who had previously called for the prime minister to resign, warned this morning against changing the rules as he told the BBC Radio 4 Today program: “My view has not changed … but the simple truth is that the Tory Party had a vote of confidence. The rules are the rules. It’s for a year, it gives him a year.

“Whether it’s Boris or anyone else, dealing with stagflation is going to be some very difficult decisions.

“Do you want a leader, whoever it is, to look over his shoulder every month at this tax increase or whatever. “So no, I do not want the rules to change. I don’t think they will change either, so he needs the year he used to prove to us that he can really live up to the promises we made at the 2019 election, which were low taxes. ”
