Group and organize your tabs in Chrome

One of the first things anyone learns when using Google Chrome is that tabs can seemingly multiply. For most of us, opening new tabs is like breathing; it just happens whether we are well aware of it or not. When you open so many tabs that you can barely recognize the text next to each icon, you might be wondering if there’s a better way to organize your browser. Lucky for you, there is a way to group tabs in Chrome.

THE SHORT ANSWER

To start a new tab group on Google Chrome (desktop), right click on a tab and select Add tab to new group

To group Chrome tabs on mobile, tap the Tabs button at the top right. Long-press a tab, then drag it over the tab you want to group it with. Release it to create the tab group.

In 2020, a Google Chrome Update added a new feature known as groups tab† This essentially allows you to organize groups of tabs in a functional, user-friendly way. You can give each tab group a custom name and color, and you can choose to remove Chrome tabs from the group or remove them from the group.

Grouping tabs is currently the most efficient way to organize your browsing activity in Google Chrome. To do this, you must start a tab group and then add other tabs to that group

Start a new tab group in Chrome

To start a new tab group, right click on any of your open tabs and click Add tab to new group

Type a name for the tab group in the Give this group a name field, then click one of the colored circles below it to color the group.

After you launch the tab group, you can add other tabs to it. you can either add a brand new tab to the group or add tabs that are already open

To add a brand new tab to the group, right-click the tab group and click New tab in group† This will open a new tab within the group.

To add tabs that are already open, right-click the tab you want to add to the group.

Move your cursor over the option that reads: Add tab to group† In the extended menu, click the name of the tab group you want to add it to.

Before you start, make sure your Android version is up to date, and you also have: updated the Google Chrome app to the latest version

Open the Google Chrome mobile app and tap the Tabs button in the top right corner.

Then press the button at the top right. Select from the drop-down list Group tabs

Each tab has empty circles in the top right corner. Select the tabs you want to group by tapping the empty circles; this will mark and check them off.

When you’re done, tap Group top right.

A faster way to group Chrome tabs on mobile

Open Google Chrome on your phone and press the Tabs button at the top right.

Now on the tabs screen, long press (press and hold) one of the tabs you want to group.

While holding the tab, drag it directly to the other tab you want to group it with. When you see a larger box appear around both tabs, release the tab to place it in your new tab group.

The keyboard shortcut for opening a Chrome tab in Windows is Ctrl + t† The keyboard shortcut for opening a Chrome tab on Mac is: ⌘ Command + t

The keyboard shortcut for closing a Chrome tab in Windows is: Ctrl + w† The keyboard shortcut for closing a Chrome tab on Mac is: ⌘ Command + w

Pinning a tab to Google Chrome will lock it to the left side of the Chrome tab bar. It will also only show its icon; you will not be able to see any text on the tab.
