Air New Zealand crew member saves life of passenger on flight from Wellington to Auckland

A passenger flying from Wellington to Auckland received life-saving assistance from a cabin crew member.

An Air New Zealand crew member saved a passenger’s life.

The traveler was successfully resuscitated on Saturday on flight NZ402, a domestic service from Wellington to Auckland.

Air New Zealand confirmed the incident to: stuff but said the crew member involved didn’t want to talk about it or “make a fuss”.

A traveler in Auckland, waiting for the plane to land to catch an 8-hour shift in the other direction, said: their flight was delayed as a result – with the reason explained to passengers as soon as they could board the plane.

“As we were all seated, one of the cabin crew members came in through the intercom and explained,” said the passenger, who declined to be named.

“They said one of their cabin crew members was able to perform CPR on the passenger.”

The national airline declined to comment on the details of the incident.

It is not the first time that someone has suffered a medical incident with an Air New Zealand flight while on an Air New Zealand flight recent incident seen by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Ardern’s flight from Auckland to Nelson was diverted in May 2021 when someone on board suffered a medical emergency.

Speaking to the media at the time of the incident, Ardern praised the crew aboard flight NZ5065 for being “hugely professional”.

The Air New Zealand website states: “passenger safety is paramount” and all crew members are “highly trained”.

“All Air New Zealand flight crews are well trained for any situation and all aircraft must meet strict global safety standards,” the website reads.

“In the highly unlikely event of an emergency, the crew will know exactly what to do.”

According to the websiteeach flight has access to a doctor’s kit that the crew makes available to every doctor on board.

There is also on-call medical specialist advice for the crew via radio or telephone, as well as emergency defibrillators.
