him first Tory leadership debate will take place this weekend, with six Tory MPs currently competing for the job of Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The candidates currently in the running in the Conservative leadership race are Rishi Sunak, Penny Mordaunt, Liz Truss, Tom Tugendhat, Kemi Badenoch and Suella Braverman.

Before the first debate on Sunday, a first vote of Conservative MPs will be held on Wednesday with a second vote on Thursday.

Each candidate needs a minimum of 20 nominations from fellow Tory MPs to make it to the first ballot, so it remains to be seen how many of the 11 candidates will get enough votes.

The successful candidates then compete against each other in debates on Sunday and Monday.

Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Commerce Secretary Penny Mordaunt are likely to join the debate on Sunday, as they both already have more than 20 nominations each.

When are the Tory leadership debates on TV?

There will be two debates later this week, hosted by ITV and Sky News.

The first Tory leadership debate will take place on Sunday, July 17, followed by another debate on Monday, July 18.

The Sunday debate will be broadcast on ITV at 7pm. The number of candidates who will take part in the debate has yet to be determined and ITV has not yet set the rules and timetable for the competition.

The debate will be broadcast live on ITV and ITV Hub.

A debate will be broadcast on Sky News on Monday. The time of the debate is not yet known. Hosted by Kay Burley, the candidates face questions from a virtual studio audience.

This debate will be broadcast live and free on Sky News channel 501, via Sky News digital channels, and streamed on YouTube.
