A record prize money will be offered this week as the best in the world go head to head at the 150th Open Championship.

It’s an even more special week than usual, with the historic occasion taking place on St Andrewsthe house of golf.

Rory McIlroy arrives as favorite to end its eight-year great drought by conquering the Old Course, but Jordan SpiethScottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele are among the long list of players with strong credentials.

Tiger Woods also hits the ground running this week, on his favorite golf course in the world. The man with 15 majors to his name, two of which were won at St Andrews, skipped the US Open earlier this summer to ensure his body was fully prepared for this week.

Defending champion Collin Morikawa took home £1.6 million when he came out on top at Royal St George’s 12 months ago, but this year’s winner will earn much more than that.

The total prize pool has been increased by 22% to just under £12 million in total. Amateur golfers are not entitled to prize money.

The champion golfer of the year 2022 will receive £2.1 million for their efforts, just under a million more than the runner-up will take home.

Whoever finishes fifth in St Andrews will line up for just under £482,000, double what the player will receive on tenth. The prize pool continues to fall, with the player in 30th place winning £77,000 for example. Top 70 and ties complete the cut the Openand whoever finishes last of those who make it to the weekend will still get £26,000.

Of those who don’t make the cut, the top ten will be lining up for almost £9,000, the next 20 will take home just over £7,000 and everyone else will get close to £6,000.
