Frankie Dettori still the ‘Lionel Messi of the weighing room’ – but a big ride on Inspiral is at stake

AF, but no way out, Frankie Dettori is still a man in demand.

Marked by his old friend Martin Dwyer as the ‘Lionel Messi’ of the weigh-in room, Frankie is now the ultimate jet-set-gun-for-hire.

Former barker John Gosden may not have bothered to call Frankie, 51, to tell him he was kicked off his runners at Newmarket last weekend.

But the Italian legend’s phone – and that of his longtime trusted agent and manager Pete Burrell – has not stopped ringing since the news of his sudden and shocking separation from a longtime ally.

Frankie separated from his old fork Gosden, but was back at Newmarket’s camp less than 24 hours later and felt the love of the crowd.

Lezoo’s easy win showed Frankie still has it and many trainers are desperate to get the 51-year-old on their horses.

Aidan O’Brien has always given Frankie rides and said it was a ‘privilege to do so’ in the aftermath of the coach-jockey divorce.

And Frankie’s first ally on these shores, 73-year-old Luca Cumani, warned those in the sport not to write off the jockey.

He said: “He is determined and determined to continue, rebuild and start a new chapter in his life.

“I think he is as good as ever.

“I know it’s easy to say just because he turned the wrong side of 50 that he might be done, but that’s just a number on his birth certificate.”

Frankie said he will be touring the world in the coming weeks and has already slammed any talk of retirement.

He rode in the Turkish Derby on Sunday and will travel to Germany this weekend for their Derby.

Next week, Frankie is on her way to the US to ride for Godolphin coach Charlie Appleby while his no. 1 Will Buick remains in the UK on his title charge.

Frankie has hinted that he may have to miss the July meeting at Newmarket, which could mean the ride on Gosden’s superstar Inspiral is at stake.

Frankie, who is banned this week, said: “If you do not see me driving here in the coming weeks, it is not because I gave up!

“I’m going to be abroad. I’m not going anywhere and a lot of people have been very kind to me.”
