London fire: Eight fire engines and 60 firefighters fight massive blaze amid heat wave | UK | News

The incident at Cranford Lane has been described by the London Fire Brigade as a grass fire.

Due to the extreme heat in the capital, warnings have already been issued against lighting fires and barbecues on dry ground that has now become highly flammable.

The London Fire Brigade was called in at 9.30pm with firefighters from Hayes, Feltham, Heathrow, Hillingdon, Southall and surrounding fire stations now on the scene.

The brigade has reported that approximately six hectares of grass are on fire in three separate fields.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but the public has been asked to stay away.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade has said: “The warmer weather we’ve had is making the ground extremely dry, which unfortunately means grassland and parkland will burn quickly if exposed to even the smallest sparks.

“If you see a grass fire, don’t try to put it out yourself, as grass fires can spread very quickly and change direction without warning.

“Call the brigade and let us know where the fire is.”

The brigade has also issued advice on how to prevent grass fires, including not having barbecues in parks, public areas and balconies, clearing objects such as glass and crystals that can magnify the sun and cause objects to catch fire, and instead, safely dispose of cigarettes by dropping them on the dry ground or out of car windows.

Other advice was not to leave barbecues and open fires unattended and to extinguish them completely when you’re done.

Disposable barbecues that have been thrown away can still catch fire because they trap heat and therefore must be completely extinguished and cooled before disposal.
