Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola has ordered the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) to allow Nigerians in the diaspora to return to Nigeria with their expired international passports.
Aregbesola issued the directive while responding to a complaint from a Nigerian-American citizen, Jamui Kasumu, to the Alausa Passport Office during his unscheduled visit to the facility in Lagos on Wednesday, July 13.
He said Nigerians in the diaspora were free to return home with an expired or non-expired Nigerian passport.
“I am using this medium to instruct all Nigerian immigration officials worldwide to allow Nigerian travelers with expired passports to use such passports to return home safely in the future,” he said.
The minister also advised Nigerians in the diaspora to update their travel documents in advance to avoid rushing in case of calamities.
Earlier, Kasumu had complained to the minister that the Nigerian Immigration Service in America and Delta airline were preventing him from coming to Nigeria because of an expired Nigerian passport.
Kasumu said he was able to return to Nigeria after being given a travel certificate he obtained through a relationship in Nigeria.
“I appeal to you, Mr Immigration, to allow Nigerians with expired passports to return to their country,” he said.
