Detectives began reviewing the Houts case in late 2020 and resubmitted the investigative materials to the Santa Clara County Crime Lab for re-examination. According to police, DNA samples from the evidence matched Woodward’s DNA. The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Identification Unit also examined more than 80 latent fingerprints that were also taken at the scene of Laurie’s death, and several more matched Woodward.
The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office issued a new warrant for Woodward’s murder arrest in response to newly discovered information and evidence supporting Woodward’s impeachment and prosecution as the prime suspect during the initial investigation.
