A day after Liz Cheney dropped bomb disclosure that Donald Trump had attempted to contact one of the witnesses of the Jan. 6 commission, more details have emerged about the person in question.
The witness the former president allegedly contacted was a White House employee. The name of the person, who worked with the commission investigating the riots in the capital, has not yet been released.
News of the potential witness manipulation was first revealed by Ms. Cheney, vice chair of the committee on Jan. 6, who said Mr Trump was trying to call one of the panel’s witnesses.
“After our last hearing, President Trump tried to call a witness in our investigation,” Ms Cheney said in the closing statement at the end of the hearing.
“A witness that you have not yet seen in these hearings,” she added. “That person refused to answer or answer President Trump’s call and instead let his lawyer know about the call. Their lawyer warned us and this committee has provided that information to the Department of Justice.”
She has not released any further details about the person or motive of the call. Trump has not yet publicly responded to the allegations.
Two sources told CNN that the person contacted is considered a “support staff member” who has had no routine communication with Mr Trump and was “concerned” about the alleged attempted contact.
The witness was in a position to confirm some of the testimony given by Cassidy Hutchinson, former Trump White House aide, to the committee, according to the sources.
CNN said it had been told about the “position” of the witness Mr. Trump had contacted, but not the person’s name.
California Democrat Pete Aguilar, who sits on the committee, told the outlet that the person contacted was speaking to the panel and that it was Mr Trump who had “called someone who spoke to us.”
This is not the first time Mrs. Cheney, a Republican, has raised the issue that Mr. Trump may have tampered with witnesses.
Earlier, the Wyoming legislature said there had been a pattern of potential witness tampering that aroused “significant concern” and read portions of statements suggesting witness tampering.
Ms. Cheney told the hearing that a witness told the committee that allies of the former president had told them they would “remain in good grace in the Trump world” as long as “I protect who I must protect.”
