Rumor: Xiaomi is also working on a phone with a 200MP sensor

Motorola isn’t the only company working on a phone with a 200MP camera – Digital Chat Station reports that a phone is on the way with a 200MP sensor, a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, a 120Hz display and a 5000mAh battery.

While the leakster played coy, some are speculating that this is a Xiaomi phone, specifically the Redmi K50S Pro. Or it could be the Xiaomi 12T Pro instead (actually they could be the same, just different names in different regions).

The sensor will either be from Samsung ISOCELL HP1 or the ISOCELL HP3† Both have a resolution of 200 MP, but the difference is in the optical format and pixel size: 1/1.22” and 0.64 µm respectively and 1/1.4” and 0.56 µm (before 4-in- 1 bin).

Motorola uses the larger HP1 and placed a camera preview showed earlier today what the sensor can do with 4-in-1 pixel binning enabled – that’s still a 50MP photo! It is not yet clear which sensor Xiaomi will choose. Given the premium 8+ Gen 1 chipset, it obviously makes more sense to go with the HP1.

There are more uncertainties: does Leica work on the phone or not? We’ll have to wait for more leaks to find out.
