A Chicago suburban man charged with drowning his three young children pleaded not guilty to three counts of first degree murder on Thursday.
A grand jury this month indicted 35-year-old Jason E. Karels for the June 13 murders of 5-year-old Bryant Karels, 3-year-old Cassidy Karels and 2-year-old Gideon Karels.
Officers responding to a 911 call from the children’s mother discovered their bodies at Karels’ home in Round Lake Beach near Joliet. The Lake County coroner has determined the cause of death to be drowning. Officers at the scene found a note from Karels that read, “If I can’t have them, neither can you,” the Lake County law firm said.
Authorities have said that Karels and the mother of his children were separated but had joint custody.
Karels was arrested the day of the drowning after a 17-minute chase by Illinois state forces that ended in a crash near an Interstate 80 bridge in Joliet. Karels was hospitalized for a short time and then transferred to the Lake County Jail, where he is being held without bail.
